TWENTY-ONE

RECON TEAM

All three rushed up the spiral staircase. Lincoln beat Stephanie by five floors. He moved almost as if he were flying. Lance lagged by another two floors, ascending the steps two at a time, as fast as he could, just unable to keep up.

Reaching the top, he caught his breath as he marched across the command room to his team at the door. The rumble of engines reverberated through the abandoned base. Poking his head out, he spotted a massive Veles ship hovering overhead and rotating in a slow counterclockwise motion.

“They’re scanning the base,” Lance whispered. “Come on, we’ve got to move before they check this building.”

He pointed to a building that’d already been scanned.

“Dex, get Lincoln there. Steph, help me with this door,” he ordered.

“You’re his brother?” Dexter asked, offering a hand. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m your brother’s heavy.”

“Captain of your own squad already?! Congratulations!” Lincoln said, looking at Lance while shaking Dexter’s hand. “We can finish introductions later. Follow me.”

Lincoln took off down the street with Dexter following close behind. Marty jumped back onto Stephanie’s leg as they both grabbed the grounded door and set it back in its frame. Lance kicked the dirt around to hide the door’s impact on the ground. Both team members followed the other two and took up shelter behind a barracks.

“Why’d you ask about Akerman?” Lance asked as he settled in next to his brother.

“Being hooked up to that facility had me tapped into Veles transmissions that were routed through that building,” Lincoln explained. “When that frequency was fading, I heard a woman say that ‘Akerman had arrived’ and that she and something called Ibex were going to conduct a search.”

Lance’s stomach dropped at the mention of both names. A frustrated grumble rose from both Stephanie and Dexter.

“What?” Lincoln asked, confused. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No,” Lance replied as he handed his rifle to his brother. “That’s just Irene freaking Akerman and her pet Project go ram Ibex. Both of whom have been a terrorist thorn in the galaxy’s side for the last three years humanity has been part of the community. Or as Dexter likes to put it… Space Nazis.”

Lincoln took the weapon and ran a check on it. The red in his pupils flickered before it faded, and he placed the weapon against his shoulder.

“Well then, if you want to capture them, just say the word and I’ll help,” he offered.

“They’ve gotten away, what, two times now?” Lance asked.

“Three,” Stephanie corrected.

“Our mission is complete,” Lance added. “We can sneak out of here, report back to the ship, and be done with it. Or we can stay and take Irene and her project into custody. Show of hands for completing the mission and getting out of here.”

All three just stared at Lance. Their hands remained down.

“Okay then, we take them into custody.”

“What about the ship?” Dexter asked. “That undoubtedly had fire superiority.”

“I have Veles security codes still uploaded in here,” Lincoln said, tapping the side of his head. “If I can get close enough I can disable the ship’s weapons systems and give us the advantage.
